Non Epileptic Seizures - My Journey

Hello, my name is Harminder and I’ve been having non epileptic seizures NES for 18 years. I was approx 11-12 years when these started. I remember going to school, parts of my body would seize, I could be writing, sitting or walking and I’d fall as I lost the feeling in my legs. My body would tire from this and cause me to sleep excessively. It became difficult, my school teachers, my friends thought I was making it up to get out if PE classes or attention seeking. One Saturday, I went to Punjabi classes, as I was finishing my class up, the room went blurry and I collapsed experiencing my first seizure. At the time one of my fellows students parent was a doctor had had me sent to hospital and admitted, he explained to the paramedic he thought represented a clinical epileptic seizure. That day onwards was the start of a life change, I had no idea just how much my life was about to change! I spent the next one year being sent to tests all over the country, my seizures increased and became more apparent and visible. It wasn’t the same as parts of my body seizing, and people thought I was a liar….. the seizure was real. After a mentally and physical exhausting, painful year, my consultant for epilepsy diagnosed me with non-epileptic seizures. She sat in front of me said ‘Harminder you have pseudo epilepsy.’ This is outdated terminology…. and is now recognised as non-epileptic seizures. I hear you asking what’s the difference between epilepsy and NES, because that was definitely mine! Epilepsy is evidenced in your brainwave changing and is traced by an EEG. However my scans showed no evidence of this but my seizure presented itself as a typical epileptic seizure. This was the start of my journey……..
